The Cornflower was named Centaurea cyanus by the Swedish naturalist Linnaeus, most likely with reference to the mythical centaur Chiron, wounded by an arrow and saved thanks to Cornflower juice, or referring to the legend of the young Cyanus, found bloodless in a field of cornflowers.

The cornflower plant, in the past, was very common in Italy. Today, even if the local habitat is favourable to the growth of cornflower, this flower is quite rare, so much so that it has been reported to be at risk of extinction. The cornflower grows wild in fields, meadows, uncultivated land and in rare cases even along the roadside.

Cornflower is one of the most widely used natural remedies for the wellness of the eyes.

In particular, the flowers are rich in decongestant and anti-inflammatory substances which are very useful in case of tired eyes, conjunctivitis problems, styes, but also to reduce inflammation in case of allergies.

Cornflower flowers can also be used to stimulate diuresis and to boost detoxification of the body

An infusion of cornflower can reduce inflammation of the throat and oral cavity.

Thanks to the plant’s astringent properties, this infusion can be useful in cases of diarrhea or gastrointestinal problems.
